A huge medical overshare, and the big self-care lessons I'm thinking about

Plus, my newest THEME WORD

This is a bit of a weird post, because if I had my head on straight, it would probably be an essay, not a longform video — but the past few weeks have been a LOT, and frankly, my head has not been on straight! It’s getting there, though, and I wanted to tell you about what’s been going on.

If I’ve seemed sort of weird or cagey for the past few weeks — or if you’ve read my cryptic Notes on Substack (sorry, once an emo-AIM-away-message kid, always an emo-AIM-away-message kid) — it’s because this spring’s medical roller coaster did not end with my vein procedure. From which I am still healing, by the way!

I finally decided to deal with my varicose veins. It did not go smoothly.

I finally decided to deal with my varicose veins. It did not go smoothly.

I’ve been on a real medical rollercoaster for the past few weeks. (Years?) It took me to a heavy place earlier this month, including when it came to my ability to exercise, and I started to write about it, but then I didn’t have anything useful to say. Just a lot of sadness and anxiety and sort of being the human shrug emoji. The story wasn’t over, and I was stuck.

In this video — which I’m also paywalling, because it’s all very personal! — I talk about what happened next: yet another, possibly even more dramatic medical rollercoaster that I could truly never have predicted.

If you prefer to read, note that you can click on the “Transcript” button above and digest things that way. And if you’d rather listen in a podcast-y manner (it is, after all, sort of a voice memo from your oversharey pal), you should be able to download this like a podcast episode: Instructions are here.
