A 22-minute full-body dumbbell workout (and an announcement for beginners!)

A great legs + arms + core workout, plus some fun news

For those who celebrate, happy Mother’s Day! If it’s a challenging day for you, I’m sending you love and gentleness.

Before we dive into today’s workout, a little announcement: I’m launching a new group-based class this summer to help true beginners learn how to strength train.

If you’ve checked out my newsletter but never done a workout because you felt too nervous or intimidated — or tried one and felt confused or overwhelmed — this is for you!

If you’ve been wanting to do resistance exercise for a while but just have no clue where to start, this is for you.

If you just need someone to hold your hand (virtually) at the gym but don’t want to hire a personal trainer, this is for you.

Allow me a metaphor for a moment. If How to Move is my version of a cookbook, my 30-day strength challenges have been sort of like a cooking club: a place for enthusiasts to up their game, build some community and accountability, and challenge themselves. But based on several recent conversations with some of you, I’ve realized I haven’t exactly provided a basic cooking class: a place to truly start from the beginning and explore the basic building blocks before throwing recipes at people.

So here’s the deal: I’ll be teaching a six-week class this summer called Startup Strength for an intimate cohort (I’m thinking no more than 30 participants, but we’ll see!). The class will be mostly instructional — aka not a workout class — but we’ll move, too, and you’ll get simple movement homework to get more comfortable with the basics. You’ll have the opportunity to attend live sessions to ask questions, troubleshoot, and share your experiences with fellow participants. By the end of the course, you’ll feel ready to dive into a more formal strength program — like the ones here on HTM! The cost will be $300, or $250 for paid subscribers to How to Move. (Financial support will be available, as will the ability to pay more to help offset the cost for others, if that’s an option for you.)

Please complete the form here to join the waitlist and let me know a few preferences! You’ll be the first crew to receive the registration link when it’s ready.

On to today’s workout, which is a great complement to the May strength workout if you’re doing it — and just an awesome full-body workout to try as a one-off if you’re not (including one of my very favorite core exercises). Grab a few weight options, and let’s get started.
