A 20-minute core and conditioning challenge
Attention, endorphins: Your services are requested
Happy Memorial Day, friends — I hope you’re having a restful weekend.
Today’s workout is a rerun, and it’s one of the most popular workouts I’ve ever published on How to Move, which is so funny to me because it’s so hard to make myself do a conditioning workout, and I’ve heard from so many of you that you didn’t think this kind of workout was even for you until you tried it.
But guess what: It totally is! And it kind of sucks in the moment (unless you’re a big cardio girlie), but it feels absolutely amazing once you’re done.
The post that ran alongside this workout back in March included a very detailed testimonial from my pal Virginia Sole-Smith, but I also wanted to bring up my fave comment on the post:
“Was in a funk and can confirm post-workout that I feel better... pre-workout me wouldn't believe it!! Thanks, Anna!” —Hanna
YES!
Between the endorphins, the fact that you really can’t think about anything else when you’re powering through a set of jumping jacks, and the incredible feeling you get when you try something hard and actually succeed — this kind of workout is an amazing reset for a bad day or any kind of funk.
(And if you’re having a great day, it’s about to get even better.)
As a Memorial Day gift to you, I removed the paywall on this one, but a reminder that a paid subscription to How to Move is way cheaper than a Peloton subscription, it’s like having an anti-diet personal trainer in your pocket, and it’s a great way to support independent, anti-diet fitness journalism and coaching, and join a very friendly community of fellow movers who are tired of being yelled at to lose weight or “tone up,” whatever that means. Here’s a link to a 15% discount off your first year of How to Move — and BY THE WAY, I highly recommend clicking that from your browser and not the Substack app. In-app subscriptions cost you more, and writers get paid less, than if you subscribe via your web browser. (Sigh.)
On to today’s workout!
Hope you loved it!
And finally: My schedule has changed, and I’m now in the market for a new space to film workouts. If you or someone you know has an affordable space that might work in Brooklyn or lower Manhattan (I’m partial to natural light and exposed brick, but flexible, hah!), please reach out!
Talk soon,
Anna

Hi Anna. Great workout. Question about thrusters: I try really hard not to hold my breath but I almost always find myself doing it. I know that isn't good. Do you have any tips?
Anna, is there another modification you can recommend for the the bear crawls/taps? Per my usual, my pesky hip flexors take over, and I can barely do 3-4. Maybe there is something that would help me build up to doing it? Thanks!
